News : 7th ACM IMCOM 2013 – An International Discourse on new means of Global Communication


Malaysian Institute of Information Technology, Universiti Kuala Lumpur (MIIT, UniKL City Campus) and Sungkyunkwan University Korea (SKKU) in collaboration with Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) has successfully hosted the auspicious 7th International Conference on Ubiquitous Information Management and Communication (ACM IMCOM 2013, formerly known as ICUIMC) from 17th till 19th January, 2013 at Shangri-La's Rasa Ria Resort, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. This annual international conference was held in Malaysia for the second time.
This year, the three-day conference anticipated 404 paper submissions from countries worldwide including Japan, Italy, Russia, China, Spain and USA out of which 119 papers were rigorously selected for presentation in this conference. This year's conference contains four outstanding speeches from two keynote speakers, two invited speakers, 14 oral sessions and 3 poster sessions. Among the highlights were the keynote speech by Prof. Hitoshi Aida from University of Tokyo, Japan entitled Renewable Energy Powered - Disaster-Resilient Wireless Network Infrastructure which investigates the feasibility of WiFi-based wireless network infrastructure powered by renewable energy, used to offload mobile phone traffic in ordinary times and act as a wireless-relayed mesh network after disaster like earthquake which is frequent in Japan and Tsunami.

In conjunction with the conference, a welcoming reception dinner was hosted at Nexus Golf Resort Karambunai, Kota Kinabalu on 17th January to celebrate the participants and foster networking opportunities for researchers. The dinner was graced by the Dean of MIIT, UniKL who is also the General Chair of ACMIMCOM 2013, Prof. Dr. Roslan Ismail and Dean of College of Information and Communication Engineering, Sungkyunkwan University, Korea Dr. Dong-Ryeol Shin. Prof. Dr. Roslan said in his remarks, "This conference provides a unique opportunity in which both technology and social science meet. Opening doors for researchers and developers to exchange innovative ideas, information and significant research achievements for future benefits. Not only will it strengthened our affiliation with Sungkyunkwan University Korea (SKKU) in the academic front, but ultimately the bonds between our nations."
Some of the international participants took part in the Bamboo Dance during the Welcoming Dinner Reception at Nexus Hotel, Karambunai.
Also present at the welcoming dinner of ACM IMCOM 2013 were UniKL Deputy Presidents, Prof. Dato' Dr. Mohamad Azemi Mohd Noor (Academic & Technology) and Dato' Hj. Mohamed Hisham Che Abdul Ghani (Management & Services), distinguished guests from IIM Board of Directors and guests from Sungkyunkwan University, Korea.

This international conference was organised with the aim to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and information in promoting new visionary approaches and interdisciplinary researches in various facets of information management and communication technologies appropriate for ubiquitous computing and application environments. All papers presented were intellectually distinguished not only in novel idea, new results, work in progress and state of the art techniques, but also provides the directions and stimulation for future research activities in the area of global information and communication technologies. Besides cultivating opportunities for collaborative research, the conference also fostered both research excellence and recreational content.
