Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI), YB Dato' Paduka Mukhriz Tun Mahathir applauded vigorous effort taken by Universiti Kuala Lumpur in cultivating the culture of entrepreneurship among its students. He emphasised that creative and diligent entrepreneurs is one of the factors enticing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from developed countries to Asian countries including Malaysia.
Speaking at the launch of Universiti Kuala Lumpur Student Entrepreneurship Association (SEA) in an Engagement Session with UniKL students held at UniKL Malaysia France Institute (UniKL MFI) on February 6, 2013, YB Dato' Paduka Mukhriz also highlighted that the strong persistence of Malaysia's economic growth in the international trade sector is very much contributed by the competitiveness of our export products in the international market. "Malaysia has a positive balance and trade surplus in its international trade activities where most of our products exported overseas to countries like China and India are not only commodity products but also electrical and electronic products. The number one products that are high in demand in terms of export to China are Electrical and Electronic products. This is where I believe that entrepreneurs play a crucial role. This proves that we have the strength in our Electrical and Electronic products and this might be something that young entrepreneurs from UniKL today might want to look into."
Earlier, UniKL Chairman, YB Datuk Dr. Adham Baba in his welcoming speech said the establishment of SEA is to accelerate the cultivation of entrepreneurial culture, activities and to raise awareness among students to be active in all entrepreneurship programmes at all campuses in line with the vision and mission of UniKL.
YB Datuk Dr. Adham further added, entrepreneurial programmes undertaken by UniKL received overwhelming response from various quarters since the beginning of its introduction, especially among the students. Strong support from MARA and several other government agencies such as the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) has also been roped in to boost the module and content of entrepreneurial activities in UniKL with aim to develop highly competitive global entrepreneurs.
YB Dato' Paduka Mukhriz launched Universiti Kuala Lumpur Student Entrepreneurship Association (SEA) in an Engagement Session with UniKL students held at UniKL Malaysia France Institute (UniKL MFI). The Engagement Session was organised by Centre for Student Entrepreneurship (CSE), UniKL MFI and Corporate Communication Division, Chancellery with around 400 UniKL students who are actively involved in entrepreneurship activities attended the session.
SEA is a proactive initiative taken by the university to strengthen and cultivate the culture of entrepreneurship among students. Consist of students from all UniKL branch campuses who are entrepreneurs and actively involved in entrepreneurship and business, SEA is supported by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) as an avenue for students to exercise their interest and thus, participate actively in entrepreneurial cultivation activities organised at the campus and university level. Members of SEA are empowered to run entrepreneurial activities by themselves with guidance and supervision by the established SEA committee comprising of UniKL staff.
There are five main activities of SEA namely:
- SiswaNiaga - Gathering of students who own business for networking & activities.
- SIFE - Students in Free Enterprise where students conducting business activities via social entrepreneurship.
- Kosiswa - a short form for Koperasi Siswa UniKL Malaysia Berhad, a cooperative registered with SKM that manages members' shares & organizes related business activities.
- TCom - which refers to Technopreneur Communication, a Facebook based portal which aims to be the main communication channel for SEA and its entrepreneurial activities.
- AlumniNiaga (UAE) - A group of graduates who are still interested in continuing their entrepreneurial activities or have involved in business after their completion of study.
Also present at the session were UniKL newly appointed President/CEO, Prof. Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su'ud, UniKL Deputy Presidents, Dato' Hj. Mohamed Hisham Che Abdul Ghani and Prof. Dato' Hj. Ahmad Zahir Hj. Mokhtar, Dean of UniKL MFI, Assoc. Prof. Haron Abas, Head of CSE, Hj. Bahtiar Kasbi as well as distinguished guests from MITI, MARA, INSKEN and SME Corporation.
