KUALA LUMPUR, 7 March 2016- Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Prasarana Malaysia Berhad signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly develop the Centre of Excellence for Rail industry in Malaysia, mainly in developing education programmes and professional trainings concerning rail technology.
The MOU signing event was held at Prasarana's head office at Menara UOA, Jalan Bangsar Utama. Rapid Rail was represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Haji Ahmad Nizam Mohamed Amin while UniKL was represented by its President and CEO, Prof. Dato' Dr. Mazliham Mohd Su'ud. This significant event was also witnessed by YB Dato' Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Minister at the Rural and Regional Development Ministry, Tan Sri Ismail Adam, Chairman of Prasarana Group Malaysia Berhad, Director General of MARA, Datuk Ibrahim Ahmad, UniKL Chairman, YB Datuk Dr. Adham Baba and President and CEO of Prasarana Group, Dato' Azmi Abdul Aziz.
The MOU between Rapid Rail and UniKL Institute of Product Design and Manufacturing (UniKL IPROM) will pave way for both parties to work together and share expertise to develop talents in the field of Rail maintenance and repair in the country. The centre of excellence which will be known as ‘Akademi Rail' will offer programmes in the field of safety, scheduling, customer service, maintenance operation and management of rail technology.
UniKL IPROM will be offering programmes and academic syllabus related to the rail industry whilst the Rapid Rail Depot will provide technical expertise in the area of the LRT system, Monorail and MRT including industrialmanship opportunity for students. The Depot is equipped with classrooms, component repair centre and equipment for MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) for rail transportation systems.
YB Dato' Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in his address to the media and audience says, "The Rail Academy being developed through this MOU is a new specialisation. The Malaysian Rail Supporting Industry Roadmap, envisages a high demand of skilled human capital in the field of MRO for the rail industry up to 2030. This is in accordance to the rapid development of the rail sector in Malaysia where investments is expected to be as high as RM160 billion."
Tan Sri Ismail Adam, Chairman of Prasarana Group Malaysia Berhad in his welcoming address says, "This MOU is significant in terms of developing the rail industry in Malaysia. Rail is becoming a major mode of transport in the city, and the government also has plans to expand rail transportation to other major cities in Malaysia. This effort will require a significant increase in skilled human capital in Malaysia especially in the rail industry. This MOU with UniKL will hopefully fill the void of talent in the rail industry. This MOU will also provide opportunities for Prasarana staff to upskill or further their studies in programmes related to Rail Technology which will be offered by UniKL in the future."
