NEWS : UniKL CARE-Penang Flood Relief 10 -12 November 2017

PENANG, 12 November 2017 – Universiti Kuala Lumpur's Community Action Relief Effort (UniKL CARE) Penang Flood Relief Mission – a university social responsibility programme initiated in response to the worst flood disaster to hit the state of Penang, came to an end today. Prof Dato' Dr Mazliham Mohd Su'ud, UniKL's President and CEO had flagged-off the UniKL CARE volunteers in a ceremony held on 10th November at UniKL British Malaysia Institute (UniKL BMI), Gombak. The UniKL CARE contingent, comprising of 300 volunteers from 12 campuses nationwide brought together with them RM60,000 worth of food, essential items and medicines for those affected by the flood in the northern-state.

Prof. Dato' Dr Mazliham in his address during the flag-off ceremony said, "This effort was launched after UniKL's Chancellor, the Regent of Pahang, Tengku Mahkota Abdullah Al-Haj Ibni Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah had personally requested us to mobilise volunteers to help those affected by the floods in Penang. We received an overwhelming response from the students wanting to be volunteers for the Penang Mission. We reached our intended target of 300 volunteers within two days of the launch."

"I am so proud of the voluntary spirit showed by our students, however due to logistical issues we had to limit the number of volunteers this time around. The team being deployed from UniKL BMI consist of volunteers from campuses around the central and southern region including UniKL BMI, UniKL MIIT, UniKL MIAT, UniKL MFI, UniKL IPROM, UniKL Business School, UniKL MESTECH, UniKL MICET and UniKL MITEC. They will congregate at UniKL MSI, Kulim and will be joined by volunteers from the northern region including UniKL MIMET and UniKL RCMP."


In total, the 300 volunteers for the UniKL CARE mission comprised of 276 students and 24 staff. The UniKL CARE-Penang Relief is also proud to note that Brahim's, one of the nation's renown packed food manufacturer and UniKL's industrial partner, sponsored a total of 864 packets of instant food in support of the mission.


The three-day mission focused on clean-up and restoration efforts as well as delivery of essential items including packed food, mineral water, water filters, electric kettles, gas stoves etc. Mobile clinics were also set up by volunteers from UniKL Royal College of Medicine Perak (UniKL RCMP) to provide free health check-ups and screenings for those affected by the floods.

The UniKL CARE initiative is part of the university's continuous effort and commitment to the Malaysian community. Besides running successful academic programmes, programmes such as this actively advocates a culture of compassion and understanding within staff and students. This is in line with the university's aspiration to develop highly skilled, knowledgeable and noble citizens.
