Research Highlights

 

 Expanding the commercial usage of KAPOK TREE FIBRE

Ceiba pentandra or Kapok tree as its mostly used common name may also refer to the cotton obtained from its seed pods. The pods contain seeds surrounded by a fluffy, yellowish fibre that is a mix of lignin and cellulose. The fibre is light, very buoyant, resilient, resistant to water and flammable. It is commonly used as filling in mattresses, pillows, upholstery and stuffed toys such as teddy bears.


UniKL researchers lead by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Abu Hanifah Abdullah has found potentially new commercial inventions using the raw material that is easily obtainable in Malaysia through exhaustive research which started from the idea of using the biodegradable materials from Kapok tree fibre for aircraft thermal and acoustic insulation blankets for aircraft cabins.

 
His team of "Malaysia on Mars" comprising of three students from UniKL Institute of Product Design and Manufacturing (IPROM) and the Kapok fibre research was officially announced as the Top 5 (finalist) entries from more than 2,600 entires worldwide and participated in the final round of International Airbus Fly Your Ideas Competition 2011 which was held at Paris Airshow-Le Bourget 2011.
 
"The recognition given by such a prestigious organization in a major event has spurred me to go more in depth in exploring Kapok fibre as a commercial commodity in the high-tech industries", said Abu Hanifah.

News : 2 Gold Medals for UniKL in NRIC 2014


UniKL Team after the prize giving award ceremony

UniKL students were awarded with two gold medals and a second-place honor at the Novel Research and Innovation Competition 2014 (NRIC 2014) held on August 19-22 at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang
 
Featuring students from local institute of higher learnings (IHL), Thailand and Indonesia, NRIC is a research contest showcases the significant research done by final year undergraduates. Each IHL is allowed to have up to 15 entries in the 7 categories at the competition, namely; Life Science , Fundamental Science, Information Technology & Communication, Health & Medical Sciences, Engineering & Technology, Social Transformation & Creative Art, Community Research & Innovation Competition (CoRIC). This year there were more than 200 students with more than 100 projects competing.
 
UniKL BMI students, Muhammad Naqiuddin Mad Arif,  Shairiman Bin Abu Khairi and Mohd Zainolazizi Bin Jaafar swept the gold medal  in the category of Engineering and Technology together with another group from UniKL MSI; Ahmad Hafizy Mohamad Idris, Mohammad Izzuddin Ariffen and Wan Ahmad Fadhli Wan Abdul Rashid.  Muhammad Naqiuddin, Shairiman and Mohd Zainolazizi of UniKL BMI were awarded the gold medal for their submission on the "Development Of Portable Car Jumper For Emergency Protection." Meanwhile, UniKL MSI students, Ahmad Hafizy, Mohammad Izzuddin and Wan Ahmad Fadhli managed to convience judges to award them with gold medal for their project on "Window Grill Assembly Jig (Wingaj)"
 
In the Community Research & Innovation Competition (CoRIC) category, a team from UniKL MIMET which comprised of Mohamed Haq Nuzul Bin Haron  and Abdul Rahim Bin Nawi captured second  place for his product titled "Portable Compact Multi Source Power Charger For Mobile Gadgets".  Their high level of confidence during their presentation, was good enough to attract juries and investors' attention to award them with the 2nd place behind a team from University Teknologi Petronas (UTP). For this year event, CoRIC attracted 10 teams from local IHLs.

CoRIC was first introduced as a sub-competition under NRIC in 2011 and was successfully held consecutively each year afterward. It is a viva-oriented competition, in which requires the participants to present their ideas of how to make a better world in front of judges. The team with the most captivating idea will then be granted with capital to make their idea a reality.
 
Apart from that, the rest of the UniKL team managed to grab1 silver medal and 9 bronze medals. The full result is shown at the table below. To all participants, congratulations. You make UniKL proud of you as we are UniKL!!!
