The pods contain seeds surrounded by a fluffy, yellowish fibre that is a mix of lignin and cellulose. The fibre is light, very buoyant, resilient, resistant to water and flammable. It is commonly used as filling in mattresses, pillows, upholstery and stuffed toys such as teddy bears.

Research Highlights

 

 Expanding the commercial usage of KAPOK TREE FIBRE

Ceiba pentandra or Kapok tree as its mostly used common name may also refer to the cotton obtained from its seed pods. The pods contain seeds surrounded by a fluffy, yellowish fibre that is a mix of lignin and cellulose. The fibre is light, very buoyant, resilient, resistant to water and flammable. It is commonly used as filling in mattresses, pillows, upholstery and stuffed toys such as teddy bears.


UniKL researchers lead by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Abu Hanifah Abdullah has found potentially new commercial inventions using the raw material that is easily obtainable in Malaysia through exhaustive research which started from the idea of using the biodegradable materials from Kapok tree fibre for aircraft thermal and acoustic insulation blankets for aircraft cabins.

 
His team of "Malaysia on Mars" comprising of three students from UniKL Institute of Product Design and Manufacturing (IPROM) and the Kapok fibre research was officially announced as the Top 5 (finalist) entries from more than 2,600 entires worldwide and participated in the final round of International Airbus Fly Your Ideas Competition 2011 which was held at Paris Airshow-Le Bourget 2011.
 
"The recognition given by such a prestigious organization in a major event has spurred me to go more in depth in exploring Kapok fibre as a commercial commodity in the high-tech industries", said Abu Hanifah.

News : 8th ACM IMCOM 2014 (Siem Reap, Cambodia)



The 8th International Conference on Ubiquitous Information Management and Communication (ACM IMCOM 2014, formerly known as ICUIMC) has recently taken place at Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf and Spa Resort, Siem Reap, Cambodia. Co-hosted by Malaysian Institute of Information Technology, Universiti Kuala Lumpur (MIIT, UniKL City Campus) and Sungkyunkwan University Korea (SKKU) in collaboration with Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Applied Computing (ACM SIGAPP), the auspicious annual conference took place from 9 – 11 January 2014.




ACM IMCOM 2014 aims to provide a platform for promoting new visionary approaches and interdisciplinary researches. This year's conference contains four outstanding speeches of two keynote speakers, two invited speakers, 14 oral and three poster sessions. Out of the 403 paper submitted, only 115 papers were selected by the conference committee. 
 
Among the highlights were the keynote speeches by various renowned academias such as:
  1. Prof. Ben Lee, Oregon State University, USA; "Wireless HD Video Transmission Technology: Challenges and Future Applications", and
  2. Prof. Hamid R. Arabnia, University of Georgia, USA: "Bio-Inspired Supercomputing and Big Data".
     

 
In conjunction with the conference, a warm Welcoming Reception was hosted by MIIT, UniKL at Sokha Angkor Resort, Siem Reap on 9 January with the purpose to enable networking opportunities for conference researchers and participants. The event was graced by General Co-Chairs of ACM IMCOM 2014, Prof. Dr. Roslan Ismail, Dean of MIIT, UniKL and Prof. Suk-Han Lee of Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), Korea. Also present at the Welcoming Reception were Dato' Hj. Mohamed Hisham Che Abdul Ghani, Deputy President (Management & Services), Universiti Kuala Lumpur; delegates from Cambodia and guests from Sungkyunkwan University, Korea.
 
Throughout the dinner, guests were serenaded by live traditional Khmer music and dance performances such as Coconut Shell dance, Fishing dance and the captivating Apsara dance. The event ended with an exchange of souvenirs between Dato' Hj. Mohamed Hisham of UniKL and Prof. Suk-Han Lee of SKKU as well as a photo-opportunity for all guests and delegates.


 
SKKU, Korea also hosted a Conference Banquet at Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf and Spa Resort, Siem Reap on Friday, 10 January 2014. The event was made memorable with Cambodian traditional dance performances as well as special montage on ACM IMCOM 2014 conference highlights presented by MIIT Creative Media Team.
 
Apart from Malaysian and Korean universities, ACM IMCOM 2014 participating universities include those from Australia, Canada, China, France, Japan, India, Italy, New Zealand, Pakistan, Singapore, Taiwan, UK, US and Vietnam.
