The pods contain seeds surrounded by a fluffy, yellowish fibre that is a mix of lignin and cellulose. The fibre is light, very buoyant, resilient, resistant to water and flammable. It is commonly used as filling in mattresses, pillows, upholstery and stuffed toys such as teddy bears.

Research Highlights

 

 Expanding the commercial usage of KAPOK TREE FIBRE

Ceiba pentandra or Kapok tree as its mostly used common name may also refer to the cotton obtained from its seed pods. The pods contain seeds surrounded by a fluffy, yellowish fibre that is a mix of lignin and cellulose. The fibre is light, very buoyant, resilient, resistant to water and flammable. It is commonly used as filling in mattresses, pillows, upholstery and stuffed toys such as teddy bears.


UniKL researchers lead by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Abu Hanifah Abdullah has found potentially new commercial inventions using the raw material that is easily obtainable in Malaysia through exhaustive research which started from the idea of using the biodegradable materials from Kapok tree fibre for aircraft thermal and acoustic insulation blankets for aircraft cabins.

 
His team of "Malaysia on Mars" comprising of three students from UniKL Institute of Product Design and Manufacturing (IPROM) and the Kapok fibre research was officially announced as the Top 5 (finalist) entries from more than 2,600 entires worldwide and participated in the final round of International Airbus Fly Your Ideas Competition 2011 which was held at Paris Airshow-Le Bourget 2011.
 
"The recognition given by such a prestigious organization in a major event has spurred me to go more in depth in exploring Kapok fibre as a commercial commodity in the high-tech industries", said Abu Hanifah.

News : UniKL MFI Students Win ‘Made In UniKL’ Final Year Project Competition 2014

Three final-year students of the UniKL MFI emerged winners of the 4th ‘Made In UniKL' Final Year Project (FYP) Competition 2014 which was held  from 10th to 11th June 2014 at Universiti Kuala Lumpur British Malaysian Institute (UniKL BMI).
 
Abdul Munir Lukmanul Hakim, Muhammad Ibraahim Jaafar, and Raymie Anak Keni won the competition through their idea on ‘ECOGREEN CCM – Coconut Chrasher Machine which was able to provide solution to overcome the coconut waste.


 
Abdul Munir, who was the leader of the team, said the machine was developed in two month was able to beat 50 other projects from 8 other various campuses.
 
"The ‘Made In UniKL' competition was to produce the best ideas for a project that offer the best solution to the current scenario and we succeeded in producing an idea to develop the a machine that overcome the problem faced by rubbish collectors."
 
The Ecogreen CCM project emerged as the winner among a total of 50 entries participated from 8 other UniKL campuses across Malaysia. A RM1,500 cash prize grant was awarded to the winning team.


 
The other two runner-ups were a team from UniKL BMI with the project entitled ‘Development of Portable Car Jumper For Emergency Protection' and from UniKL MSI with the project entitled ‘Novel Magnetorheological Valve'. Each of them received a RM 1,000 and RM750 cash prize respectively.
 
The ‘Made in UniKL' is an annual competition, organised by Centre of Research and Innovation (CoRI) with UniKL BMI. This year UniKL BMI was honored to be selected as the host for this year event.
 
The event was officiated and closed by the Deputy President (Academy and Technology), Prof. Dr. Azanam Shah. Prof. Dr. Azanam also presented prizes to all winners. 
 
The ‘Made In UniKL' FYP Competition recognises and rewards creative and cutting-edge innovations that has beneficial to society by offering solution to the current scenario and has potential for commercialization.
