Ceiba pentandra or Kapok tree as its mostly used common name may also refer to the cotton obtained from its seed pods. The pods contain seeds surrounded by a fluffy, yellowish fibre that is a mix of lignin and cellulose. The fibre is light, very buoyant, resilient, resistant to water and flammable. It is commonly used as filling in mattresses, pillows, upholstery and stuffed toys such as teddy bears.

Research Highlights

 Expanding the commercial usage of KAPOK TREE FIBRE

Ceiba pentandra or Kapok tree as its mostly used common name may also refer to the cotton obtained from its seed pods. The pods contain seeds surrounded by a fluffy, yellowish fibre that is a mix of lignin and cellulose. The fibre is light, very buoyant, resilient, resistant to water and flammable. It is commonly used as filling in mattresses, pillows, upholstery and stuffed toys such as teddy bears.

UniKL researchers lead by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Abu Hanifah Abdullah has found potentially new commercial inventions using the raw material that is easily obtainable in Malaysia through exhaustive research which started from the idea of using the biodegradable materials from Kapok tree fibre for aircraft thermal and acoustic insulation blankets for aircraft cabins.

His team of "Malaysia on Mars" comprising of three students from UniKL Institute of Product Design and Manufacturing (IPROM) and the Kapok fibre research was officially announced as the Top 5 (finalist) entries from more than 2,600 entires worldwide and participated in the final round of International Airbus Fly Your Ideas Competition 2011 which was held at Paris Airshow-Le Bourget 2011.

"The recognition given by such a prestigious organization in a major event has spurred me to go more in depth in exploring Kapok fibre as a commercial commodity in the high-tech industries", said Abu Hanifah.

News : UniKL MITEC Research Colloquium 2014 (MRC2014)

For the last three years now, Research and Innovation (previously R&D) section of UniKL MITEC has been actively organizing Research Colloquium. In 2012 and 2013, only internal participants (MITEC academic staff and students) were involved in the colloquium. For this year, R&I section has initiated to invite participants from other universities in Johor state and other institutes of UniKL. MRC2014 held on 12 November 2014 (Johor Bahru) with theme "Engineering and Science advancement in Malaysia".

Invited speaker Mdm Kamisah Mohd Ghazali, Senior Vice President of IRDA (Iskandar Regional Development Authority) talked on "Engineering and Science Advancement in Malaysia", in which she paid more attention to the significance of Engineering and Science development in Iskandar Region.

It was a very successful event for researchers who have successfully presented their research findings, share their ideas, discuss on future collaborations and gain feedback from panels/participants. There were 38 research papers and 21 posters presented in MRC2014, where more than 20 of the participants were from different universities/institutes such as UiTM Pasir Gudang, UPSI, UniKL MIAT, UniKL MFI.  For poster presentations session, FYP students from UniKL MITEC were also actively involved.

The objectives of the event were:
  • - To move towards We4Asia 2020 initiative;
  • - To enhance research culture;
  • - To bring researcher under one roof and to motivate doing research;
  • - To exercise and improve research elements such as writing and presentation skills;
  • - To support in increasing number of publications in Indexed journals;
  • - To expand UniKL MITEC reputation by publishing more papers;
  • - To strengthen collaboration with other institutes/universities/organizations.

Best Paper Presentation award was given to Saleha Md. Salleh (lecturer from UiTM Pasir Gudang).

The Best Poster Presentation Award winner is Muhammad Soufi Hasbi, FYP student from UniKL MITEC.

MRC2014 Proceeding will be printed based on successful presented papers and selected papers will be published in newly established MITEC journal:  Malaysian Journal of Industrial Technology. In order to publish more scientific papers, inculcating research culture is highly encouraged among lecturers and students. Apart from improving writing and presentation skills and exchange views from different researchers, this colloquium is undoubtedly in line with We4Asia initiative. Research and Innovation section of UniKL MITEC plan to organize more research-related events in the future. MRC2014 Committee has decided to further upgrade this event into Conference in 2015.
